The experience turned Scholtz, 51, into a self-proclaimed grassroots environmentalist. He joined the Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force to campaign for the restoration of the Pine River and numerous contaminated sites left by chemical dumping.

More recently, Scholtz has joined a campaign fostered by the National Wildlife Federation to spotlight the impact climate change has on outdoor hunting and fishing.
