The trout is a game fish that serves as an early-warning indicator of the health of the environment. The appearance of algae known as didymo in Vermont waters has now raised an early warning about the future health of the state's trout fisheries.

Didymosphenia geminata is the scientific name; rock snot is the colloquial name. Whatever it's called, didymo was found in the Connecticut and White rivers earlier this summer. Recently, it has appeared in the storied Batten Kill.
